Virus: wear a mask … and a Cross
HONG KONG (SE): The Covid-19 coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has occupied prime time television news and space in the news media since the beginning of January 2019. While medical experts and government agencies provided regular updates and guidelines to fight the virus, Oblate Father John Wotherspoon and his charity organisation, Mercy-HK, began the Wear a mask…and a Cross campaign in early February.
Explaining the reasoning behind the campaign, Father Wothersppon wrote on his blog: “Everyone is asking ‘what can we do?’ One famous story recorded in the Bible can help us:
“Chapter 21 of the Book of Numbers records how the Hebrew people revolted against Moses in the desert and thousands died after being bitten by ‘fiery serpents.’ To save them, Moses made an image of a fiery serpent and held it up. All who looked at the image were saved.
“In the gospel of John Chapter 3, Jesus predicts how being lifted up on a cross will save people, just like the image made by Moses. Through the ages, Christians have worn a cross as a witness to Jesus’ love … and for protection from evil.
“Some crosses have a figure of Jesus, some don’t. It doesn’t matter. Some people, like prisoners I know, even make their own crosses out of any material they can find. May Jesus’ Cross protect us and heal us!”
On August 6, Father Wotherspoon updated his blog with some awesome pictures of Dicky Cheung Wai-kin, a celebrity singer and actor, who joined the campaign and wrote: “Thank you Dicky Cheung for joining Wear a Cross campaign at this time of Covid-19!”
