So Dicky Cheung Is Singing And Voicing the LEGO Monkie Kid Series
LEGO’s latest news about LEGO Monkie Kid is that the dude who played Monkey King in the wildly popular Journey to The West (1996, Hong Kong TV series) will play a character in the show. Yup, the star from the show that is older than most of the kids that play with the toy, will star in the latest LEGO animated series (Chinese version only).
Journey to The West was memorable for Dicky Cheung’s charming portrayal of the Monkey King. However, most folks who watched the 30 episode series, 24 years ago may remember the show for its “it was all a dream” ending. A move that turned the series from a fan favourite to “I wish I never watched this in the first place”.
Anyway, Dicky is back and he is, according to LEGO, “on board as a voice talent for its Monkie Kid animated content and theme song in Mandarin”. That’s vague. LEGO added that “Dicky will similarly reprise his role in the animation”.
So turns out he will be voicing the Monkey King, not the Monkie Kid. This would be the third time Dicky has played the role. The second would be in “The Monkey King: Quest for the Sutra”, another live-action TV series.
About that theme song. LEGO says that it includes “the addition of a tongue-twister” a feat that Dicky did by “singing 119 words in a short span of 18 seconds, within just one take”. It added that the theme song will be available on LEGO’s YouTube Channel.
The Chinese version of LEGO Monkie Kid Mini Movie and series will be shown in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, as well as Malaysia. Here, it will debut on NTV7 later this year. No exact date or time was given.
