The Bride with White Hair

When Hong Kong television star Dicky Cheung married Chinese actress Jess Zhang (49 Days, Twins Mission) in the historic San Agustin Church in the Philippines last Monday, she wore a white hairpiece symbolising her hope that they would grow old together.

Cheung, 43, and Zhang, 34, tied the knot after dating for about 10 years – and a year after she had a miscarriage eight months into the pregnancy.

The bride shed tears when the groom held her hand and said his vows, reported Hong Kong’s Ming Pao Daily News.

In the pews in the 400-year-old church, their friends, Hong Kong singers Sammi Cheng, Andy Hui and William So, were moved to tears too, said the report.

The newlyweds were mobbed by fans and reporters when they left the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage.

Cheng, her ex-boyfriend Hui, So and former actress Deborah Li were among the couple’s 100-plus guests. The wedding was followed by a banquet, complete with a five-minute fireworks show, at Hotel Sofitel in Manila.

At the banquet, Cheung told reporters: “I didn’t believe that a bride would be the most beautiful on the wedding day, but it’s true.”

The star who popularised the role of the wily Monkey in the highly successful 1996 Hong Kong-TVB serial Journey to the West (currently on rerun over Astro Wah Lai Toi in Malaysia) added that Zhang had stood by him through the ups and downs of his career.

Said the actor who also starred in shows such as Kung Fu Soccer (2004), The Monkey King (2002) and The Duke of Mount Deer (2000): “There are many beautiful girls, but a beautiful, kind-hearted girl is hard to find.”
